Ta Xua cloud hunting: when to go, where to sleep, which spine

A valley of cloud you can stand above, if you sleep on the mountain and wake before the sun. Which months to pick, where to sleep, and which of two Dinosaur Spines is which.

The short answer

Ta Xua cloud hunting works best from January to March, the only stretch both cloud guides we read cover, and one of them stretches the season from October to April. Be on the ridge at dawn, before the sun reaches the summit. Sleep up on the mountain: one guide says staying at least one night is required, because of the time it takes to reach Ta Xua. And plan the road. From Hanoi you go by bus or drive along National Route 6 to Bac Yen town, then up the DT112 mountain road, and for the last stretch visitors ride a motorbike or hire a local motorcycle taxi.

That is the whole trick. Ta Xua is far, it is early, and the last stretch is a steep, twisting climb. The morning clouds belong to the people who were already standing on the ridge when the sun came up.

We are a family on Cat Ba, a long way east of these mountains, and we do not run trips in Ta Xua. We have not stood on that ridge ourselves. This guide comes from three guides read side by side: a motorbike rental shop, a tour company and a Vietnam tourism information page. Two of them sell bikes or tours, so where they disagree, on the season or the length of the ridge, we tell you.

Since 12 June 2025 Vietnam has 34 provincial-level units, 28 provinces and 6 centrally governed cities. Son La kept its name, so Ta Xua is still in Son La. The district level went too, so older guides that say Bac Yen district read oddly on new maps, and Ta Xua now sits in the Son La commune group Lang Chieu, Hang Dong and Ta Xua. Yen Bai is now part of Lao Cai.

Which Dinosaur Spine is which: Son La or Tram Tau

Two places share the Dinosaur Spine name. This guide is about the Son La one, above Bac Yen, which is the easier of the two. The other is at Ban Cong commune, Tram Tau district, in the old Yen Bai province, now Lao Cai. Check which one your homestay or guide means before you pay for anything.

Season adviceTwo guides give a cloud window: January to March, or October to AprilBetter trekked from September to March, because April to September brings frequent rain, flooding and more snakes

So the September to March advice you may see online belongs to the Tram Tau trek, not to the Son La clouds.

Walking the ridge on the Son La spine

The Son La ridge is a kilometre to a kilometre and a half long, depending on which guide you ask. You can walk it, or local drivers will carry you along it by motorbike. That is your call, not ours. The valley below is hundreds of metres deep, and one guide calls the terrain hard on foot. Wear shoes with grip.

It is quite cold at night and in the early morning on the spine. What to carry (our guide on what to pack for northern Vietnam covers the rest by season):

  • A jacket.
  • A scarf or a hat.
  • Gloves.
  • Shoes with grip, since the ground on foot is hard going.

Ta Xua best time: months and hours for clouds

The guides do not agree on the months, so here is what each one says and who is saying it.

  • A tour company guide: January to March is the best period for cloud hunting.
  • A motorbike rental shop guide: October to April, when the cloud cover is best.
  • The Vietnam Tourism Information page: September to March, but that is trek advice for the Tram Tau spine, not a cloud window for Son La.

January to March is the only stretch both cloud guides cover, so that is where we would aim. Treat the other months as less certain. Our guide to the best time to visit northern Vietnam goes month by month.

On the hour, the guides agree more. Be on the ridge at dawn, before the sun reaches the summit. Another guide gives early morning until about 10am.

From April to July, one tour company says, the terraced fields around Ta Xua fill with water and shine silver. That can be a lovely trip, but it is a different one from a cloud trip.

If the first morning gives you nothing

The view depends largely on the weather and changes often, so people often want more than one night. Check the weather beforehand and pick a day without rain. Leave a spare morning in your plan. Plenty of homestays sit near the spine, so a second try does not need a second journey.

You cannot book the clouds. You can only be standing there when they arrive.

If the weather stays shut, the closest stops on the usual northwest routes are Moc Chau and Son La city. Our piece on Moc Chau through the seasons is worth a read before you go. We cannot promise clouds, and nobody honest can.

Where to sleep: choosing a Ta Xua homestay

Ta Xua has stays from high-end places to budget homestays. The better ones have valley views, pools or a cloud view, so being on the right ridge with the right view matters. Before you book, find the place on Google Maps and check its location.

A short checklist for choosing:

  • It faces the valley that fills with cloud.
  • It sits near the spine, as plenty do.
  • It serves meals, because there are almost no eateries for visitors and you eat where you sleep.

Expect wild vegetables, home-grown produce, chicken and local pork, and kitchen-smoked buffalo meat. It is simple food, and after a cold dawn on a ridge it tastes better than it has any right to. We give no prices for rooms or meals here, because we found no reliable source for them.

How to get to Ta Xua from Hanoi

Ta Xua is in Son La province, about 240 km west of Hanoi. You take a bus or drive along National Route 6 to Bac Yen town, then up the DT112 mountain road, which has many sharp curves. The final section is a steep, twisting climb. For the last stretch, visitors ride a motorbike or hire a local motorcycle taxi.

One guide puts Ta Xua on the longer side of the recommended rides from Hanoi. Riders often link it with Moc Chau, Mai Chau and Pu Luong in the south, and with Son La city, Mu Cang Chai or Sapa further north. If that sounds like a lot of road, our guide to quiet places in northern Vietnam has gentler options.

After the clouds, the coast

We run nothing in Ta Xua. The slow way to finish a northern trip is Hanoi, then Cat Ba. Our private transfer from Hanoi takes 4 to 5 hours door to door. Our slow northern journey runs 5 to 10 days and is tailor-made: we send a proposal and a number after we know your dates. It does not include Ta Xua, so treat the mountains as your own add-on.

If you only want the island, the Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay combo is 2 days and 1 night at $119 per person. Celina of the Sea cruises from $165 per guest sharing a cabin, for 2 days and 1 night. Message us on WhatsApp +84 961 737 103 with your dates.

What we read for this guide

A motorbike rental shop guide, a tour company guide, the Vietnam Tourism Information page on the dinosaur spine, and the official vietnam.travel page on the new provincial system, read in autumn and checked against each other. Two of them sell bikes or tours, so we say where they disagree. Laws, fees and prices change fast, so check close to your dates. If you are unsure about something, message us: if we don't know, we will say so and find out.
