Lan Ha Bay in morning mist, limestone islands rising from flat water

Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay

The island we live on and the bay we work on. This is the first chapter of A Rustic Vietnam.

We live on this island and work on this water. Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay are the first chapter of A Rustic Vietnam, not the whole book. When a new region joins this site, it will be because someone in our family has taken that trip first.

~400limestone islands in Lan Ha Bay alone, with a fraction of the boats
139beaches in the bay, most with no road and no crowd
1,133islands in one UNESCO World Heritage site since 2023

A good fit if

  • You want water without crowds. Lan Ha spreads the same seascape over around 400 islands.
  • You like one base and day trips, not packing every night.
  • You enjoy simple food cooked by people who eat it themselves.

Not a fit if

  • Your main plan is nightlife. Cat Ba Town goes quiet early, and honestly we prefer it that way.
  • You want big-resort comforts. Most boats here are small wooden day boats.
  • You are counting beaches. This coast is rocky and dramatic, not one long swimming lagoon.

Lan Ha or Ha Long? Same rock, different days.

Since September 2023 UNESCO lists the two as one site of 1,133 islands. The difference is not the limestone. It is how many boats sit on it, where you can swim, and where you sleep.

Lan Ha Bay, from Cat Ba Small boats out of Cat Ba, around 400 islands and 139 beaches to spread across. Lighter traffic, open swimming, floating villages you pass slowly.
Ha Long Bay, from Ha Long City The famous name. Large overnight cruises, a handful of approved routes, and the busiest water around midday.

We run our days from Cat Ba, and we won't pretend the other side doesn't exist. If you want one big overnight cruise and only have one night, Ha Long City is the better base.

When to come, honestly.

Getting here, briefly.

Most guests arrive by water. Timetables move with the seasons and the sea, so when you book with us your host sends the right ferry for your exact date.

From HanoiA limousine van with the crossing included, about 3 to 3.5 hours door to door. Private cars too.
From Ha LongThe Tuan Chau to Gia Luan car ferry. The last one leaves at 15:00, so plan around it.
From Ninh BinhA private car or bus to the coast, then a ferry across to the island.

Sleep at our house.

Rustic House is our wood guesthouse at 70 Tung Dinh, a four-minute walk from Tung Thu beach. The ground floor is a café where tour mornings begin; up on floors 7 and 8, a rooftop looks over the lake and the karsts.

Stay there, or just drop in for tea before your day. It has its own website and its own reviews.

Questions guests ask.

Is Cat Ba part of Ha Long Bay?
Since September 2023 UNESCO lists Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba Archipelago as one World Heritage site of 1,133 islands. They sit in different provinces, but the seascape is one continuous piece of limestone.
How many days do we need in Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay?
Two nights is the honest minimum: one day on the water and one on land. Three lets you slow down, and four or five let you wait out a bad weather day without losing the trip.
Can we see Lan Ha Bay on a day trip?
Yes. Our cruise and kayak day starts from $55 and the plankton night tour from $38. If you can, sleep one night on the water: after the day boats go home, the bay changes character.
What if the weather turns bad during our stay?
Boats answer to the harbour master, not to us. If the bay closes we contact you early with honest options: move your date, switch to a land day, or cancel. July and August carry the highest storm risk, so keep a spare day.
Is Cat Ba right for older parents or teenagers?
Usually yes. The Ha Long cruise and the Viet Hai valley day suit mixed ages, and rock climbing keeps teenagers happy. Some piers are steep at low tide, so tell us who is travelling and we will match the boats.
Should we book tours before we arrive?
From June to August, yes: our small groups fill first. In the quiet months you can decide the evening before. Message us either way and a host, not a booking form, answers.

Come and see it for yourself.

Tell us your month and your pace, and we'll tell you honestly whether Cat Ba is your place.
