Why we chose this trip

Most itineraries look good on paper and fall apart at the changeovers. We know where the days get long: the Hanoi road, the ferry queue, the sleeper bus that arrives at 03:30. We shape the route around that, keep the coast for last so the trip ends slowly, and stay on WhatsApp the whole way. The base for the Cat Ba part is our own house, which is not a coincidence.

The day, as it really runs

Day 1

Hanoi, gently

Arrive, settle into the Old Quarter and walk it slowly. We suggest keeping the first day empty so the flight does not run into a schedule.

Day 2

Hanoi to Ninh Binh

A morning transfer south to Ninh Binh, with time for the river and the rice fields in the afternoon.

Day 3

A full day in Ninh Binh

A slow day among the limestone and the rowing boats on the river, at your own pace, with a night in the same place.

Day 4

Ninh Binh to Cat Ba

The direct bus and ferry to Cat Ba takes four to five hours and needs no changes in Hanoi. You arrive with the afternoon usable.

Day 5

A day on Lan Ha Bay

A small group or private boat day: kayak the lagoons, swim, lunch cooked on board and a quiet evening at our house.

Day 6

A day on the land

Cat Ba National Park in the morning, or Viet Hai village by bicycle, then a slow afternoon and a rooftop dinner.

Day 7

Back to Hanoi

A morning bus and ferry to Hanoi, three to three and a half hours, in time for your onward flight or one more night in the city.

This is a seven day sketch, not a script. A five day version drops one Ninh Binh day. A ten day version adds Sapa or the Ha Giang Loop before the coast, with a sleeper transfer that we book. We build the final route with you.

  • You have a week or so in the north and want it planned by people who know the places between the sights.
  • You would rather have fewer stops and slower days than a route that ticks off six cities.
  • You want the coast to be the calm part of the trip, hosted by a family you have already met.

Tell us early if

  • You want a fixed price today. Route and price depend on your choices, so we reply with a proposal and a number once we know your dates.
  • You want every city in the north in seven days. We suggest fewer places and longer stays, and we say so plainly.
  • You want somewhere outside the north. For now we only build routes we have hosted ourselves, and Cat Ba and its neighbours are where we start.

We do not sell a cut and paste package. You tell us your dates, your pace and what you enjoy, and we return a route and a price. Route and price both depend on your choices, and you can change either before you pay.
Fewer places, longer stays
Northern Vietnam rewards slow travel. The roads are long and the changeovers are where days disappear. We usually suggest fewer stops than you first asked for, and we explain why before you decide.
Weather
October to April is the clearest, driest half of the year in the north. Summer is hot with warm water, and July and August bring storms on the coast, so we keep a spare day for the bay and tell you where the plan has slack.

Questions guests ask

How much does it cost?
It depends on the length, the route and how you travel. We reply with a written proposal and one number once we know your dates and your group. There is no fixed package price.
Can it be shorter or longer than seven days?
Yes. The trip runs from five to ten days. Five drops a Ninh Binh day. Ten adds Sapa or the Ha Giang Loop before the coast. We shape it around the days you have.
Do you include Sapa or Ha Giang?
We can. We book the sleeper transfers to and from the coast, and we suggest departures that arrive in daylight. Tell us if the mountains matter to you and we place them so the trip still ends slowly.
Who runs each part of the trip?
The Cat Ba and Lan Ha days are run by local partners and hosted by us, and the transfers use licensed operators. We name each partner in your written proposal, so you know who is doing what.
Can we start somewhere other than Hanoi?
Usually yes. Tell us where you land or where you start, and we build the route from there. Ninh Binh and the coast are the parts we know best, and we say so if something falls outside that.
