Honeymoon Ha Long Bay cruise: choosing the ship and the cabin

For a honeymoon or an anniversary, shop by where the ship sleeps and what your room opens onto, not by the word romantic. Four ships compared for two people, with the cabins, the evenings and what to arrange ahead.

The short answer

If you are planning a honeymoon Ha Long Bay cruise, shop by two things: where the ship sleeps, and what your room opens onto. For a night in Lan Ha, Tulip and Celina of the Sea both anchor there. Tulip has two Honeymoon Suites of 45 m² at the bow ($385) and two Royal Suites with a terrace and jacuzzi ($575). Celina has three 45 m² balcony grades with a bathtub, $165 to $200. For the Ha Long caves, every Catherine suite has a balcony and a bathtub facing the water, from $210.

Flowers or a cake? Tell us the occasion and we ask the ship (see the note below). We are a family on Cat Ba; we do not run these ships, we book them for guests.

Celebration extras are arranged by each ship, and none appear in the cabin and activity details we hold. Tell us the occasion when you book and we will ask the ship. We cannot promise the answer.

What a honeymoon Ha Long Bay cruise really needs

Three things, and none of them is the biggest ship. A room you actually want to sit in, with a door that opens to the water. A quieter anchorage, which for us means a night in Lan Ha. And one unhurried evening: a slow dinner, a drink on deck, the cliffs going dark. The ships differ most on the first two.

TulipSleeps in Lan Ha. Two Honeymoon Suites and two Royal Suites with a jacuzzi, all at the bow on the third deck.Stops for kayaking near Ba Trai Dao, not at the Ha Long caves. Adds a surcharge on 24 and 31 December.
Celina of the SeaSleeps in Lan Ha. Three balcony grades of 45 m², each with a private balcony and a bathtub. The company itself says Wi-Fi can drop between the cliffs and engine noise can be heard at times. Check in at lot 41A by 11:45.
CatherineEvery cabin is a suite with a private balcony and a bathtub facing the water; the Royal and Grand Suites add a foot massage. Sails the classic loop with Sung Sot Cave and Luon Cave.By our own note, Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top are among the busiest stops in Ha Long, with many steps.
AmbassadorDeluxe and Premium both have a private balcony; the Suite and Captain Suite add a terrace and a bathtub. Dinner is served on the open sundeck when the weather allows.Boards at Bai Chay, not Tuan Chau. The kayak at Luon Cave costs extra.

Which cabin for two, and what it costs

For two people we would treat the cabin as the evening room, which is why we look at the bathtub tier first. These are the figures in our ship data for 2 days and 1 night, and rates are set in dong, so we confirm the price for your date.

Above that, you are buying service. Catherine's Villa President, at 200 m², adds a personal butler, a 60 minute massage and a bottle of wine. Grand Pioneers' Essence Suite adds house wine, afternoon tea, turndown and a sauna session, and its Pearl Suite on ship II has an open bathtub facing the bay. Those rooms are real, and they are worth it for exactly one kind of trip. If this is that trip, say so and we will check what is free. Our guide to cabins and suites has the full ladder.

Sunset, dinner and the evening

The evening is the part worth planning. Sunset and a cooking class fall at different hours by ship: Catherine runs its class on the top deck at 17:30, Celina has sunset on deck at 17:30 and the class at 18:30, Grand Pioneers serves canapes and sunset at the Sky Bar at 17:45, and Ambassador opens the Piano Lounge or sundeck at 17:30 with a happy hour. Tulip offers a cooking class and sunset tea. These are typical times, so confirm them for your date.

After dinner the ships divide:

  • Ambassador serves a set dinner on the open deck when the weather allows, with a live band that rests on Mondays.
  • Catherine offers karaoke at extra cost.
  • Grand Pioneers has a karaoke room, and karaoke is not in the price.
  • Tulip offers squid fishing, cards or karaoke.
  • Celina offers squid fishing, the Sky Bar or an early night at anchor.

Drinks are not included on any of the five ships. If your idea of the night is the quiet one, that is not a small difference, and it is worth telling us when you book.

Lan Ha or Ha Long: where the ship spends the night

Tulip and Celina sleep in Lan Ha Bay. Catherine, Grand Pioneers and Ambassador follow the Ha Long loop with Sung Sot Cave and Luon Cave. We find Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top among the busiest stops, so a Lan Ha night is the one we would pick for a quieter evening. That is our view, not a promise of quiet. Ship size, as plain numbers: Tulip has 43 cabins, Celina 62 suites and Ambassador 45, while Grand Pioneers is two sister ships of up to 160 guests each.

Wi-Fi decides things for some couples. Celina says it can drop between the cliffs, Ambassador lists it in the restaurant and lounge, often patchy among the islands, Grand Pioneers lists it in public areas and Tulip in the cabins. Inside the ship, ask for a cabin away from the bar and the karaoke. We confirm the cabin and deck in writing before you pay. If you are weighing one night against two, our guide to one night or two on a Ha Long cruise covers that choice.

Dates, holidays and the weather

Holiday dates can cost more. Tulip adds a surcharge on 24 and 31 December and Ambassador on New Year's Eve, and Celina, Catherine and Grand Pioneers list holiday surcharges. We quote October to April for clear air. Storm risk is mostly July to September, and our notes for four of the five ships warn that storms can close the bay or cancel sailings. The captain decides whether a boat sails, and the harbour authority can close the bay. Keep a spare day, and read Lan Ha weather month by month before you pick the month. If the weather closes the bay, we help you move the night or get your money back under the ship's rules.

What to arrange before you board

  • The occasion, told to us early. We ask the ship about flowers, a cake or a decorated room, and we cannot promise the answer.
  • One neat outfit. Ambassador's itinerary asks for smart clothes at the sundeck dinner, while the ship's own FAQ says there is no dress code. A collared shirt and proper shoes settle either answer.
  • The extras that are not in the rate. Drinks are extra on all five ships, the spa and massage on four, and Ambassador's kayak at Luon Cave costs about 460,000 dong per two person kayak.
  • The right pier. Ambassador boards at the cruise port in Bai Chay, Celina at lot 41A of Tuan Chau marina with check in by 11:45.
  • The cabin and deck, in writing, before you pay. Our guide on how to choose a small cruise in Lan Ha Bay covers the questions that come before the cabin.

Tell us the occasion and your dates on WhatsApp, +84 961 737 103, and we will check with each ship what your evening would look like and answer from what they tell us.

After the night aboard, finishing on Cat Ba

The ships return ashore around 10:15 to 12:15 on day 2, so a guest can usually reach the 15:00 last ferry from Tuan Chau. From Ambassador's Bai Chay port, our transfer first drives to the Tuan Chau ferry. On Cat Ba, our 2D1N Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay combo is $119 per person.

Where this comes from: the cabin, rate and route details above come from our own ship data, checked on 27 October 2026. Rates change, so we confirm the price for your date.
