Halong Bay cruise 2 days 1 night vs 3 days 2 nights: is day two just a repeat?

Roughly 22 to 23 hours aboard on one night, a day two that is a short new morning, and a second night that is worth it mainly when the bay is the point. Typical times, ship by ship.

The short answer

Halong Bay cruise 2 days 1 night vs 3 days 2 nights? For most guests, one night is enough. On the five ships we sell, you are aboard roughly 22 to 23 hours from boarding to back ashore, and day two is a short new morning, not a repeat. Take a second night only when the bay itself is the point of your trip.

So, is day two just a repeat? On one night, no. Day two is a morning with one stop you have not seen yet. Check-out falls between 09:00 and 10:00, and you step ashore between 10:15 and 12:15. The repeat question belongs to the second night, and the answer depends on the operator and the route.

We are a family on Cat Ba and we sell bay trips, so we want your booking and you should know it. We do not run these big ships. Each one belongs to its own operator. We publish a 2 day plan for every ship we sell. For 3 days 2 nights we quote ship by ship and date by date, because we do not publish a fixed day-by-day plan for it.

Every time in this guide is typical, not promised. Boarding, check-out and landing move with the date, the tide, the weather and the season. Confirm the pier and the times in writing before you pay.

The real hours, ship by ship

Here are the times from the 2 day plan on each ship page. They are typical, so confirm them for your date. Counting from lounge check-in to landing, the trip runs about 23 to 24 hours. Counting from boarding, it is roughly 22 to 23 hours aboard. Ambassador is a little under 22.

Three details save trouble. Four of the five ships start from Tuan Chau, but Ambassador starts from the cruise port at Bai Chay, so tell your driver. Celina's page on our site lists check-in at 11:15 and asks you to check in by 11:45, or you pay for your own boat to the ship. Our Catherine page asks you to be at the lounge by 11:30 with your passport. Confirm the pier in writing.

What day two really looks like

  • Tai chi on the sundeck at first light, around 06:00 to 06:15, on the four ships that list it.
  • One morning stop that differs by ship: the farming village of Viet Hai on Tulip, kayaking at Tra Bau on Celina, Luon Cave by kayak or bamboo boat on Catherine, Luon Cave by boat on Grand Pioneers, Ti Top Island on Ambassador.
  • Check-out, then the run back to the pier.

On all five plans the day-two stop is not one of the day-one stops, so the morning is new. Weather can change it: on Celina, the crew moves the paddle to a floating village in rough weather. On Ambassador, whose Luon Cave stop is on day one, the ship's own website gives two answers on whether the bamboo boat is included. The kayak is extra either way. Ask about it on any ship that lists a cave boat or kayak.

What a second night adds, and what may repeat

Ships anchor overnight, so a second night gives you another dusk and another dawn. It also gives you a slow full day in the middle. Our own cruise FAQ puts it plainly: one night is enough for most guests, and two nights buys the day when the bay feels empty.

Squid fishing is offered on the evening of day one on all five of our ships, and tai chi on the morning of day two on four, so these are the parts that can come round again, depending on the operator.

Do you change boats on night two?

It depends on the operator, and nobody should assume. Some operators move guests to a smaller day boat on the second day, to reach water the large ship does not enter. Others say they never change boats, with one boat and one crew all the way. Our page for Grand Pioneers notes that its 2 day trip stays in Ha Long Bay, and its 3 day program adds a day on a smaller boat into Bai Tu Long, including Vung Vieng fishing village. So ask before you pay, in these words: do we change boats, and where do we sleep on night two?

Independent travellers describe the payoff. One traveller who did three days says boats converge on the same caves and viewpoints on the first day, and that by the second much of that traffic had fallen away. Their second night was in a beach bungalow, not on the ship. Another liked a full boat day without hours on a bus, out where there were far fewer people, though that trip was in February 2020, when she says the coronavirus scare left the bay 30 to 40 percent quieter than usual. Reviewers disagree, though. One who cruised Bai Tu Long calls a day and a night about right. Another, also on Bai Tu Long, says the people they met on one night trips found it too short.

Operators also argue that the route matters as much as the number of days: a quieter route on one night can beat a busier route on two. Our guide to how to choose a small cruise in Lan Ha Bay covers that side. A second night does not have to buy more of the same. At its best, it buys the quiet middle day.

Hours on the water against hours on the road

The cruise clock starts at the pier, but your day starts earlier. From Hanoi to Ha Long, guides disagree on the drive: from a little over 2 hours to about 4 hours, depending on hotel pick-ups and stops. Both ways, that is roughly 4 to 8 hours of road for about 22 to 23 hours aboard. A second night adds time on the water, not time on the road.

The other end matters too. Our four Tuan Chau ships land back between about 10:30 and 12:15, and Ambassador lands at Bai Chay around 10:15. If you fly the same day, ask us the drive time to the airport for your flight before you pick a ship. We will not guess a safe flight time for you. Other ships set their own check-out times, so ask.

What the vlogs don't show

These come from independent travel writers and our own Catherine page. They are not our own observations.

  • One writer saw local rowing boats come alongside the ships selling snacks and drinks.
  • Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top are on almost every Ha Long cruise, so expect other groups and many steps, most of all on weekends and Vietnamese holidays.
  • One writer in 2020 described pockets of floating rubbish where boats had anchored, and said a single-use plastic ban seems to be enforced on the boats.

Weather, and the spare day

The harbour authority closes the bay in bad weather, mostly between July and September. The ships then move your date or refund under their written policy. We send you that policy before you pay and help you rebook. If you travel in those months, keep a spare day. Our Lan Ha weather month by month guide has the longer picture. If weather cuts a second night short, ask the ship for its rule in writing before you pay.

How to choose

  • Choose 2 days 1 night for a tight schedule, or when the bay is one stop among several. Some operators also suggest it for a first visit, and our own cruise FAQ says one night is enough for most guests.
  • Choose 3 days 2 nights when the bay is the point, you like slow days, and you have a spare day for weather.
  • Ask every operator four things: which stops on day two, whether you change boats, which pier, and what time you must be out of the cabin.

If cabins are part of your choice, our guide to cabins and suites explains what the names hide. If you are still weighing a day trip against a night, read our guide to a day trip or a night on the bay.

Or start from Cat Ba

If you are already on our island, our small-boat overnight in Lan Ha Bay is 2 days 1 night. We pick you up at your hotel in Cat Ba Town and board at Beo pier, with no more than 12 guests. Boats do not sail in unsafe seas, and that call belongs to the captain. If the cruise is one stop in a longer trip, our Northern Vietnam slow journey is tailor-made: we send a proposal and a number after we know your dates.

For the big ships, message us on WhatsApp at +84 961 737 103 with your dates, how many of you there are, and the ship you like. We will send the ship, the cabin, the route, the price and the payment terms in writing. Nothing is charged before you agree.
