Lan Ha Bay weather, month by month
Every travel site has a weather table. Almost none of them are written by people who live here. This one includes the months we don't push, because knowing when not to come is worth more than a discount.

The short answer
October to April is the easy window: dry air, clear light and calm water most days. May and June bring the warmest sea and the greenest bay. July to September is storm season, often fine, sometimes shut, never dull. January and February are the mist months: cool, quiet, and either the most beautiful photos of your trip or a grey boat ride, depending on luck and temperament.
The bay doesn't really have bad months. It has months that suit different travellers, and a few weeks each summer when we would honestly tell you to keep a spare day in your plans.

Month by month, the honest version
| Month | What it's really like | Best kind of day |
|---|---|---|
| January | Cool, often misty. The crowds are gone and the bay turns soft and silver. | Slow cruise and Viet Hai village. Kayak only if you like cool air. |
| February | Like January with more drizzle. Beautiful in a moody way, not a swimming month. | Covered boat, hot lunch, empty lagoons. |
| March | The mist lifts and warm afternoons return. A quiet, good month. | Full cruise and kayak day. |
| April | Warm, dry, green and calm. Our pick for almost anyone. | Anything. This is the month to say yes. |
| May | Hot afternoons, warm water, the bay at its greenest. | A day built around swimming. |
| June | Peak swimming. Short showers, usually late in the afternoon. | Cruise and kayak, early start, long lunch. |
| July | Storm season starts. Many perfect days and some closed harbours. | Keep a flexible day and book close to the date. |
| August | Warmest water of the year, and the wettest month. | Swim between weather fronts. Ask us for the three-day forecast. |
| September | Storms ease and the light turns gold again. | Full cruise. Calm mornings come back. |
| October | Dry, golden and calm. Book a little earlier than usual. | Every trip. Overnight combos are at their best. |
| November | Like October with fewer people. Our favourite, quietly. | Two days, one night. The water is glass most mornings. |
| December | Dry and cooling, busier around Christmas, crisp light. | Slow cruise with hot tea on the front deck. |
Average daytime highs run from about 19°C in January to 34°C in June and July. Sea temperature follows a month or so behind the air.
What actually closes the bay
Rain doesn't. Rain from a covered boat is calm and the bay changes colour beautifully. What stops trips is strong wind and rough sea, mostly from the open east. When that happens the harbour closes the outer routes and the captain's word is final. In July, August and early September it happens a few times a month, usually with a day or two of warning.
When your trip can't run, we tell you the evening before or first thing in the morning and you choose: move the date, swap to a land day on the island, or cancel with a full refund. You decide, not the small print.
No one can promise you the weather. We can promise an honest forecast from someone who watches this bay every day, before you pay anything.
Which trips fit which season
- October to April: the full Lan Ha day with kayaking, or two days with a night on the water. Dry evenings make the overnight worth it.
- May to September: build the day around swimming, start early and rest through the hottest hours. Warm dark nights are also when the plankton glows best.
- January and February: choose slow. A covered boat, a hot lunch, Viet Hai village, and a guide who knows where the limestone looks best in fog.
If your dates are fixed
Most guests can't move their holiday, and that's fine. Tell us your dates when you message and we'll look at the forecast with you as the day gets closer. If the sea looks unfriendly, we will suggest the best land day on the island or a different order for your trip through the north. Sometimes the most useful thing we can say is: come a day later.
What to pack, season by season
- October to April: a warm layer for the boat deck, a light rain jacket, and shoes with grip for wet stone steps.
- May to September: reef-safe sun cream, a hat, a dry bag for your phone, and a change of clothes for after the swim.
- Any month: cash in small notes for drinks and village shops, and a little patience with the tide. It runs the schedule, not us.
