Lan Ha Bay Cruise & Kayaking

One full day on the quiet side of the bay. Paddle into lagoons, swim off an empty beach, eat lunch cooked on board.

Quiet side Full day Max 12 guests Small group Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay

At a glance

Lan Ha is the same limestone seascape as Ha Long, listed together by UNESCO in 2023, but it carries a fraction of the boats. We leave from Beo pier, ten minutes from the house, and spend the day where the big cruise ships don't fit: shallow lagoons, a working fishing village and a beach you can reach only by water.

Why we chose this trip

We tried several day boats before we settled on this crew. They keep the group small, cook lunch on board instead of bringing boxes, and they move the route with the tide so you reach the lagoons after the morning boats have gone. On a good day they stretch the swim stop instead of rushing back to the pier. That flexibility is the reason we sell it.

The day, as it really runs

07:40

Tea at the house (optional)

Staying in town? Walk over to Rustic House at 70 Tung Dinh for tea before pickup. We'll show you the route on the map and tell you what the weather is doing.

08:00

Pickup and Beo pier

Hotel pickup in Cat Ba Town. Ten minutes later you're boarding at Beo pier and heading out into Lan Ha.

10:00

Kayak the lagoons

About 90 minutes of flat-water paddling in double kayaks, under limestone arches and into sheltered lagoons. The guide paddles with you.

11:30

Swim stop

Anchor off a small beach. Swim, float, or stay on deck. Nobody is counting.

12:30

Lunch on board

Fresh seafood, rice, vegetables and fruit, cooked in the boat's kitchen while you cruise.

14:00

Floating village

A slow pass through a working fishing village. Please ask before photographing people or their homes.

16:30

Back to town

Return to Beo pier and hotel drop-off. That evening your host checks in to ask how the day really went.

Times move with the tide and the weather. On a calm day we would rather give you a longer swim than keep to the clock.

Is this day right for you?

The honest version.

A good fit if

  • You want the bay without the crowds, and time to actually swim.
  • You are happy in a kayak for about 90 minutes on flat water, or happy to watch from the deck.
  • You like lunch cooked in front of you more than a buffet.

Tell us early if

  • You get seasick easily. We will suggest the calmest month and seat.
  • You are travelling in July or August. Keep a spare day in case the sea closes.
  • You need a vegetarian or allergy-safe lunch. Tell us the day before.
Weather
Boats don't sail in unsafe seas, and that call belongs to the captain. Storm risk on this coast peaks in July and August. If a trip can't run we tell you the evening before or first thing in the morning, then you choose: move the date, swap to a land day, or cancel.
Wildlife
Fewer than 70 Cat Ba langurs survive. Our boats keep their distance from the cliffs where they feed and never feed any animal, including the macaques on Monkey Island.
Changing your plans
Message us as early as you can. The earlier we know, the more we can do, and moving your date is usually simpler than cancelling.

Questions guests ask

How is this different from a Ha Long Bay cruise?
Same limestone scenery, far fewer boats. Lan Ha has around 400 islands and most mornings you will paddle a lagoon with nobody else in it. That is the reason to start from Cat Ba.
Do I need kayaking experience?
No. The water is flat, the kayaks are doubles and the guide stays with the group. If you would rather stay on the boat, that's fine and costs nothing.
I'm not a strong swimmer. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Life jackets are worn on the water and the swim stop is optional. Tell your guide at pickup and the crew will keep an eye out.
What happens if it rains?
Light rain and the trip runs, the boat has covered deck space. Unsafe seas and it doesn't sail. See the weather note above for what happens next.
Can you do this privately?
Yes. We can book the boat for your group only. Message us your numbers and dates for a price.
