Starting from Cat Ba turns the day around: your morning belongs to the quieter Lan Ha channels, where the big cruise ships don't fit, and you cross into Ha Long itself with the cave, the kayak and the swim still ahead of you. Why we chose this trip

This is the easiest boat day we sell, and we keep it honest about what it is: a full loop of both bays rather than a deep paddle into one. Sixteen guests is bigger than our other boats, and in return you get both seascapes, the cave and the crossing in a single day. We send families here first: the pace is gentle, and when you tell us your children's ages the crew brings the right life jackets.

The honest version.

A good fit if

  • You want to say you have seen Ha Long Bay, without giving it two days or a night on a boat.
  • You prefer an easy day on the water: short optional kayaking, one swim stop, plenty of deck time.
  • You are travelling with children or parents and want the gentlest boat day we run.

Tell us early if

  • You get seasick easily. Tell us and we will suggest the calmest month and a seat near the middle of the boat.
  • You are set on kayaking a lot. The paddle here is short and optional; the Lan Ha day trip gives you about 90 minutes.
  • You are travelling in July or August. Keep a spare day in case storms close the bay.
Weather
Boats don't sail in unsafe seas, and that call belongs to the captain. Storm risk on this coast peaks in July and August. If the trip can't run we tell you the evening before or first thing, then you choose: move the date, switch to a land day, or cancel.
Changing your plans
Message us as early as you can. The earlier we know, the more we can do, and moving your date is usually simpler than cancelling outright.
Children on board
This is the easiest of our boat days for families. Tell us your children's ages when you book so the crew has the right size life jackets on board.

Is this the same bay as the cruises from Hanoi?
The same limestone seascape, inscribed together by UNESCO in 2023 as one World Heritage site of 1,133 islands. The difference is traffic: from Cat Ba your morning is spent in the quieter Lan Ha channels rather than queueing behind large boats.
Why start from Cat Ba instead of Hanoi?
Starting on the island puts you on the water by around half past eight, with the morning spent in the quieter Lan Ha channels. You are also already where the boats leave from, instead of a pre-dawn transfer from Hanoi.
Do I need to be able to swim?
No. Life jackets are provided and worn on the water, the kayaking is flat and short, and the swim stop is optional. Tell your guide at pickup if you are not a swimmer so the crew keeps an eye out.
What happens if it rains?
Light rain is not a problem, the boat has covered deck space and the trip runs. Heavy weather is different: the captain makes that call, and we contact you with other options. See the weather note above.
Can children join?
Yes, this is the easiest of our boat days for families. Tell us their ages when you book, so the crew has the right size life jackets on board.
