Lan Ha Bay Plankton Night Tour

Go out as the sun drops, swim while the sky turns, then watch the water light up with plankton in the dark. Dinner with a local family after.

After dark 4 hours Max 10 guests Small group Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay

At a glance

Bioluminescent plankton needs two things: warm water and real darkness. Lan Ha has both once the day boats leave, because the bay sits away from the lights of Ha Long city. You cruise out for the sunset, swim while the last light goes, and after dark the guide finds the darkest, calmest water he knows. If the plankton shows, every paddle stroke and jump lights up blue. Then dinner at a local family restaurant before we take you home.

Why we chose this trip

We like selling this trip because it is honest work: a small boat, a local guide, a family restaurant, and a natural event nobody can fake. The captain picks the darkest, calmest spot on the night, not the closest one to the pier. And when the plankton really shows, guests come back to the house talking about it for days. When it doesn't, dinner is good and the stars still are too.

Is this day right for you?

The honest version.

A good fit if

  • You want the bay without the midday sun and the day crowds.
  • You are happy on a small boat in the evening, in calm water close to shore.
  • You accept that plankton is nature's call, not a schedule.

Tell us early if

  • You expect a guarantee. The glow depends on the moon, the water and the season, and darker nights are best. We take you to the strongest spot we know, but nature decides.
  • You are travelling around a full moon. The glow is weakest then, and we will say so before you book.
  • You get cold easily after sunset. Bring a light layer, even in summer.
Plankton, honestly
The glow is a natural phenomenon. It is strongest on dark nights with clear water, weaker around a full moon, and it cannot be guaranteed on any given evening. We take you to the strongest spot we know, and we tell you honestly how the conditions look before you board.
Weather
Weather calls belong to the captain, and night trips only run in calm conditions. If we cannot run safely we offer you another date or a full refund of what you paid us.
You will get wet
Wear clothes you do not mind getting wet, and bring a towel. The best view of the plankton is from the water, or with your hands trailing off the side of the boat.

Questions guests ask

Is the plankton guaranteed?
No, and anyone who promises that is not being straight with you. The glow depends on the moon, the water clarity and the season. Darker nights are best, we take you to the strongest spot we know, and nature makes the final call.
Do I need to swim?
No. The swim stop is optional and the plankton can be watched from the boat just as well. If you do go in, life jackets are provided and the water is calm and sheltered.
Is it safe at night?
Yes. You are with a local guide on a small boat, everyone wears a life jacket, and you stay in calm, sheltered water close to shore rather than out in open sea.
Can children join?
Yes, families are welcome and the trip is rated easy for most ages. Tell us their ages when you book, so the crew brings the right life jackets and plans the swim stop.
What if we don't see any glow?
It happens, and we won't pretend otherwise. You still get the sunset, the swim, the stars and a family dinner, and we will tell you honestly how the moon and water look before you commit to the date.
