Sapa in December: fog, frost and the real odds of snow

Is it cold, and does it snow? What December is really like in Sapa, where snow has actually been reported, how to handle foggy days, and who should pick another month.

The short answer

Yes, Sapa in December is cold, and often foggy. Snow is rare. The reports we found of snow in this month come from the top of Fansipan, the 3,143 metre summit above town, not from the streets where you will sleep. One climate guide says snow can sometimes fall in winter in Sapa itself, but we found no dated news report of it, so we would not plan a trip around it.

We are a family on Cat Ba, at the other end of the north, and we do not run trips in Sapa. We read dated news reports, the cable car operator's own notice and independent trip reports side by side. Where they disagree, we say so.

Since July 2025, Sa Pa has been a ward of Lao Cai Province. The valleys, villages and mountain are the same. Some maps may now list it as Sa Pa Ward.

What Sapa in December is really like

What you askWhat the reports sayHow to plan for it
Is it cold?Yes. Accounts range from single digits at night to the mid-teens by day, and a cold snap can push the day below 5 °C.Pack layers, not one thick coat. Keep a warm layer within reach on arrival day.
Is it foggy?Often. The national tourism board calls December to March misty and cloudy, and several travel writers describe days of fog. One trip report notes that a clear, sunny day can be followed by a foggy one.Plan for both. Keep a spare day and a Plan B for the foggy one.
Is it wet?December is one of the driest months in Sapa, according to two climate sources.Dry does not promise a view. Fog is reported on many mornings.
Will the terraces be green or gold? Not at their best. The golden terrace photos online are harvest-time shots (autumn), and the fields are green in summer, so do not expect either in December. If terrace colour is the point, December is the wrong month.
Is it busy?Reports on crowds disagree: some call winter quiet, others call the Christmas and New Year week busy.Book early for the Christmas and New Year week, and stay flexible on dates.

Does it snow in Sapa in December?

Snow on the summit is real, and dated. On 18 December 2025, light snow fell on the Fansipan summit. A national newspaper reported flakes at about 3:30 in the afternoon and said they lasted roughly five minutes and melted quickly, with the temperature around 1 to 2 degrees Celsius. It was the mountain's first recorded snowfall of that winter.

Other years show snow at the summit too. In late December 2022, sleet and snow covered the top of Fansipan. The sleet lasted about three hours from 5 am, with the temperature below minus 1. In late January 2025, ice and snow appeared on the high mountains of Lao Cai, around minus 2 at the time. The people who run the summit say heavier snowfalls came in 2019 and 2021, and that snow often begins with brief flurries.

The town is a different story. Sapa sits at about 1,500 metres, far below the summit. One climate guide says winter days there can stay below 5 °C and that snow sometimes falls, and it records a low of minus 4 in January 2016, during one cold snap. We found no dated news report of snow in the town itself, so we will not say it happens. The dated reports we found fall in December and January, and one expert compares the December 2022 fall to February 2021.

So the honest odds are these. Cold is likely. Frost is possible, and a few flakes at the summit are possible. Snow in town is something we cannot promise, and neither can anyone else.

Fog days and a clear-day Plan B

Fog is the real December question. Several unrelated travel writers describe fog and mist as common in a Sapa winter, and one says it can linger for hours or even all day. Another describes fog rolling over the valleys. One trip report says the weather changes fast, with clear blue days and cloud-swallowed days close together. On a wet, foggy day the trails are muddy and slippery and you can see very little, so it is a poor day to force a trek.

  • Keep one day free. One trip report added an extra day for bad weather, and we would too. Put anything that needs a clear sky on the day you can move.
  • Spend the foggy day in town. The cultural museum beats a muddy trail with no view.
  • Wait for the clear spell. Check the morning sky, and walk the valley when the cloud lifts rather than on a fixed hour.
  • Check Fansipan before you go. The cable car stops each year for a technical inspection; check the operator's hours the day before.
  • Treat the summit as a bonus. It is cold up there, around 1 to 2 degrees when light snow fell in 2025, and it can sit in cloud.

Cold nights and what to wear

Ask before you book: is the room heated, and how many blankets do you get? Not every hotel in Sapa has proper heating, so evenings can be cold indoors. Our guide to where to sleep in Sapa compares the homestay and the hotel, and explains why the bed matters more than the view in the deep winter months.

For clothes, think in layers: a warm base layer, a fleece, a windproof shell and shoes with grip for wet paths. Our packing list for northern Vietnam by season has the longer version. If you arrive on the overnight train, the platform at Lao Cai is cold in the early morning, so keep a warm layer in your carry-on, not in the big bag.

Is Sapa worth visiting in December?

December suits people who like cold, quiet mountain days, can live with fog and have a spare day. Pick another month if:

  • You want green or golden terraces. Those photos are from harvest time, not winter.
  • You want warmth. December is cool to cold, and some rooms have no proper heating.
  • You have only one night. One foggy day would take the whole visit.
  • You want a guaranteed view. No one can promise a clear sky.

If December still suits you, our guide to Sapa's valleys, villages and the way up is the next read.

Sapa as part of a longer northern trip

We do not run Sapa tours of our own. What we do is plan a slow trip through the north with Sapa as an option. A ten-day version of our Northern Vietnam, Slowly journey adds Sapa or Ha Giang before the coast, and we book the sleeper transfers for you. We suggest departures that arrive in daylight. Tell us if the mountains matter to you and we place them so the trip still ends slowly. The trip as a whole runs 5 to 10 days; we reply with a proposal and a number once we know your dates. Message us on WhatsApp (+84 961 737 103) with your dates.

Quick answers

  • Is the Fansipan cable car open in December? Not always all month: it stops each year for a technical inspection, and in 2025 it reopened on 13 December. Check the operator the day before.
  • Can you trek in December? Yes, on clear days. On wet, foggy days the trails are muddy and slippery, so move the walk.
  • Will I see snow in town? We found no dated report of it. Plan for cold, not snow.

What we read for this guide

Dated news reports on the Fansipan snowfalls, the cable car operator's own notice, the national tourism board, climate tables and trip reports by independent travellers, read in October 2026 and checked against each other. Sapa weather changes fast and a few sources disagree, so treat every figure here as a starting point and check again close to your dates. If you are unsure about a detail, message us: if we don't know, we will say so and find out.
