Hang Mua in Ninh Binh: the 500 steps, the best hour and the ticket

How hard the 500 steps at Hang Mua really are, whether early or late is the better hour, what the 2026 ticket costs and what to pair it with.

The short answer

Hang Mua in Ninh Binh is a stone staircase of roughly 500 steps up a limestone peak. One 2025 guide says the climb takes 15 to 45 minutes depending on crowds and fitness. There are no handrails and the climb is very exposed. Go early: one guide says it gets bustling as the day progresses, and another advises arriving as early as possible. The provincial 2026 price list gives the ticket as 150,000 VND per person over 1 m, with children under 1 m free. The view over the Tam Coc valley is the point of the climb.

How hard is it? A real climb, not a stroll. One guide calls the steps uneven, some tiny and some made for giants. If the weather looks rainy, leave it for another day: one blogger advises against going up then, and the stairs can be slippery after rain.

Now the honest part. We are a Cat Ba family, at the other end of the north, and we do not run tours in Ninh Binh. What we sell is the road that links Ninh Binh to our coast, so we have no reason to talk this place up or down. This guide is put together from trip reports and the provincial 2026 price list, read side by side, and where they disagree, we say so.

Prices and opening hours move faster than guidebooks, so check both at the gate. Also, Ninh Binh Province is now the merger of Ha Nam, Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh, according to the national tourism site. We could not find an official statement of opening hours.

The Hang Mua 500 steps, told straight

First, the name. Maps and ticket sites list the place as Mua Cave, Mua Caves or Hang Mua, and the provincial price list writes it Hang Mua with an accent. It is all one site. The cave at the foot of the hill is small: one traveller says you would not miss anything by skipping it, and another calls it only a tiny part of the visit. You come for the staircase and what is at the top.

Near the top the path leads to two main viewpoints. One holds the dragon statue, reached by scrambling over uneven rocks on narrow ledges. The other is a smaller summit with a stupa and a statue of Avalokitesvara, where you may have to queue at busy hours. One guide describes wide 360-degree views of limestone cliffs and rice fields, with the lotus ponds visible from the stupa viewpoint. From the dragon viewpoint you can look down at the Tam Coc boats rowing along the Ngo Dong river.

Down at the base there is more than the cave. The area has lotus ponds, which one guide says bloom from May to July, and two cafes inside. The same ticket covers the cave, the steps and the lotus pond.

What to bring

  • Water, since the climb is very exposed.
  • Good walking shoes, because the stairs can be slippery after rain.
  • Sun protection.

If the sky looks heavy, our guide to Ninh Binh in the rain explains what changes. The short version for Hang Mua is that the stairs have no handrails and little shelter.

Sunrise or sunset at Hang Mua: picking your hour

Early is the safer bet. One guide says to visit first thing, as it gets bustling as the day progresses. A tour-company guide names early morning or late afternoon as the best times. But another visitor went late in the evening and found it hot, humid and the steps very crowded. So late can work, but it is not a sure thing.

HourWhy it worksWatch out for
First thingOne guide says to go first thing, before it gets bustling. A tour-company guide names early morning as a best time.Opening hours are not confirmed. One 2025 guide lists 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
Late afternoonA tour-company guide names late afternoon as a best time. One visitor went late in the evening and found it hot, humid and the steps very crowded.
Middle of the dayLittle: the guides we cite name early morning or late afternoon, not midday. The climb is very exposed. One travel blog says most day tours from Hanoi include the Mua Cave viewpoint.

About sunrise and sunset: we cannot honestly promise either. We found no official hours, only that one 2025 guide lists 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.. Plan for early, treat a quiet staircase as a bonus, and check the gate time when you arrive.

Tickets and getting there

The provincial tourism promotion centre's 2026 price list gives the Hang Mua ticket as 150,000 VND per person over 1 m, with children under 1 m free. Older guides quote other figures, 100,000 VND in one 2025 guide and 20,000 VND in a 2019 one, so check at the ticket office.

SiteAdult ticket, 2026 list
Hang Mua150,000 VND, per person over 1 m
Am Tien100,000 VND
Thung Nham250,000 VND
Trang An300,000 VND, over 1.3 m

Hang Mua stands about 5 km from Tam Coc, along a road that runs between rice paddies. One guide places it between Tam Coc and Trang An, just outside the Trang An complex. Homestays and hotels around Tam Coc often lend bicycles. Ninh Binh is about 100 km south of Hanoi, and a tour-company guide puts the drive at about two hours. If your route starts with a city stop, we have also written about two days in Hanoi before the coast, and the road south delivers you into this valley.

What to pair with the climb

PlaceThe effortWhat you get
Bich DongA cave passage that is pitch dark in places on the way to the highest templeThree pagodas built into the mountain, about 2 km past the Tam Coc centre. The provincial list includes it in the Tam Coc-Bich Dong route ticket, so check what your ticket covers.
Am TienA small hill walkA lake ringed with flowers and lanterns. One blogger found it less touristy and less crowded than Mua.
Thung NhamAbout six or seven kilometres from Tam CocA bird park, best at dawn and dusk when the birds return.
Bai DinhVery large, with electric shuttle cars to cover the distances, says one guideThe national tourism site calls it the largest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia. The 2026 list shows only electric-cart and guide tickets for Bai Dinh, no entrance ticket.

The boats are the other half of a Ninh Binh day. Choosing between the Tam Coc and Trang An trips is a question of its own, so we keep it in our guide to the Ninh Binh boats. If you are deciding how long to stay, see how many days in Ninh Binh. The clean shape of a day is simple: climb in one cool window, float in the other. Guides disagree on exactly which hour, so use the table above as a starting point.

After the karsts, the sea

From here on, the advice is our own. The honest link is the direct transfer we book from Ninh Binh to Cat Ba: four to five hours with the ferry inside the journey, and the bus drives onto the ferry so your bags stay put. We collect you in Ninh Binh city, Tam Coc or Trang An, and pickup at Tam Coc or Trang An normally needs at least two passengers. Published departures run from 07:00 to 14:30, with several a day.

Once you are on the island, our small group 2 day, 1 night Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay combo is $119 per person. You sleep on the boat or in a homestay in Viet Hai, your choice, same price. Or sleep on the water: Tulip is from $155 and Celina of the Sea from $165 per guest, sharing a cabin, 2 days 1 night.
