  • You would rather not carry a big bag on and off a boat, since the bus itself drives onto the ferry.
  • You want to reach the island with a usable afternoon, not arrive in the dark.

Tell us early if

  • You are staying at Tam Coc or Trang An. Pickup there normally needs two passengers, otherwise you meet the bus in Ninh Binh city.
  • You are heading to a hotel outside central Cat Ba Town, in Xuan Dam or on the coast road. Tell us now, not when the driver is already on the island.
  • You are travelling in July or August. The ferry queue can add an hour to the trip.
Why this way and not via Hanoi
Going back through Hanoi and out again costs roughly the same and adds two to three hours and a change of bus station. There is little reason to do it unless you want a night in the city, in which case we happily plan it.
Published fares, roughly
Public tourist buses on this route run about $11 to $13 one way, and a limousine about $16, with the ferry inside the ticket. These are reference numbers, not our price. We quote one price for your date and your group.
Going the other way
The reverse run leaves Cat Ba in the morning or early afternoon and reaches Ninh Binh in the afternoon or evening. If you are flying out of Hanoi soon after, tell us and we build in enough margin.

Is there really a direct bus from Ninh Binh to Cat Ba?
Yes. Several operators run a bus, ferry, bus package once or twice a day in each direction. It takes four to five hours and needs no changes in Hanoi.
Can you pick us up at Tam Coc or Trang An?
Usually yes, but pickup there normally needs at least two passengers. If you are travelling alone, we tell you where to meet the bus in Ninh Binh city instead.
What happens with our luggage on the ferry?
On this run the bus drives onto the ferry, so your bag stays in the hold the whole way. It is the more comfortable crossing if you have a big bag or a child.
What if we stay outside central Cat Ba Town?
Transfers cover central Cat Ba Town. If your hotel is in Xuan Dam or out on the coast road, tell us in advance and we arrange the last leg.
Can you also book Cat Ba to Ninh Binh?
Yes, in either direction and as a return. Departures from Cat Ba run in the morning and early afternoon, and we suggest the one that fits your next stop.
