The short answer
A Ha Long Bay cruise with kids can be a day or a night, and the ship matters more than the length. For young children, we would start with our Ha Long day cruise from Cat Ba, the gentlest boat day we run, back in town at 16:00. For a night aboard, Grand Pioneers is the ship with a kids club and a saltwater pool, and the company lists children under five free, one per cabin, a child rate from five to ten and the adult price from eleven.
Tulip has an indoor play area and eight Family Connecting Suites for families of three to six. Catherine has a children's play area and connecting versions of its Premier Suite.
We are a family on Cat Ba. We book these ships for guests and run two day boats of our own. Everything here comes from our ship data, checked in October 2026, and from travel blogger reports.
Grand Pioneers is the only ship in our data with a published child rule. For the other four ships we do not have one, so we ask the ship for the child ages and rates for your dates before you book.

A Ha Long Bay cruise with kids: day boat or night aboard
Our Ha Long day cruise runs from 08:00 to 16:00 for up to 16 guests. It has a short optional kayak, one swim stop and a seafood lunch cooked on board. Tell us your children's ages when you book, so the crew has the right size life jackets on the boat.
The Lan Ha active day runs from 08:00 to 16:30 for up to 12 guests. It has about 90 minutes of paddling on flat water, or a seat on the deck if you would rather watch, and a beach you can reach only by water. It leaves from Beo pier, ten minutes from our house, and both day boats include hotel pickup and drop-off in Cat Ba Town.
A night aboard is a different trip. Every itinerary in our ship data lists squid fishing in the evening. On day two the ships are back ashore between about 10:15 and 12:15.
| Age | What fits | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Under five | Our Ha Long day cruise, the gentlest boat day we run. For a night, Grand Pioneers lists under-fives free, one per cabin. | On our day boats, tell us the ages so the right size life jackets are on board. For the other four ships, we ask for the child rule. |
| Five to ten | Grand Pioneers has a kids club and a saltwater pool. Tulip has an indoor play area. Catherine has a children's play area and an outdoor pool. | Grand Pioneers lists a child rate for this age. Squid fishing is on every itinerary. |
| Eleven and up | Celina's own answers say it suits families with older children best, without giving an age. On Ambassador, a live band plays every evening except Mondays. | Grand Pioneers lists the adult price from eleven. Nothing on Ambassador's list is aimed at younger children. |
Which ship has a kids club or family cabins
| Ship | For children | Family cabin |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Pioneers | Kids club and a saltwater pool. | Ocean Suite Triple, 43 m², fits three adults and a child. |
| Tulip | Indoor play area and a sundeck jacuzzi. Its list has no swimming pool. | Eight Family Connecting Suites, up to 68 m², two cabins joined by a lockable door, for families of three to six. |
| Catherine | Children's play area and an outdoor pool. | Premier Suite, 40 m², with connecting versions for families. |
| Celina of the Sea | Semi indoor pool and mini golf. | Several suites sleep three. |
| Ambassador | Nothing on its list is aimed at younger children. | Ask us. |
Starting prices for two days and one night, per guest sharing a cabin, run from $155 on Tulip to $210 on Catherine and Grand Pioneers, and we confirm the price for your date. Catherine's two restaurants have been Halal certified since February 2025, according to the company, and there is a prayer room on board, which matters to some families more than any playroom.
For every cabin type and size, see our guide to Ha Long and Lan Ha cruise cabins.

The paddle, the swim and what to ask about safety
On the Ha Long loop, the paddle is at Luon Cave, by kayak or bamboo boat on Catherine and Grand Pioneers. On Ambassador the kayak costs extra and the bamboo boat is to be confirmed. Celina paddles at Tra Bau, and in rough weather the crew moves the paddle to a floating village. Tulip stops near Ba Trai Dao.
For a swim on board, Grand Pioneers has a saltwater pool, Catherine an outdoor pool and Celina a semi indoor one. Tulip has a jacuzzi on the sundeck, not a pool. Tell us how your children swim, and we will ask the operator what the water looks like on your dates.
One travel blogger on a Bai Tu Long cruise says you do not have to kayak but can, and that everyone with small children on the writer's trip took the kayaks out and had fun. That is one trip on a different bay. We cannot tell you a route is right for your child, but we can tell you what to ask.
- Which life jacket sizes will be on board for your children? On our day boats, tell us the ages and the crew brings the right size.
- Is there a minimum age for the kayak or the bamboo boat? Our data does not list one, so we ask the ship.
- Which cabin type and deck, and is there room for a cot or an extra bed? Grand Pioneers' Ocean Suite and Ocean Suite Triple have a large window and no balcony.
- What is the child rate for your dates? Only the Grand Pioneers rule is in our data.
- How many steps on the shore stops? We find Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top both mean many steps and many boats.
Meals, evenings, Wi-Fi and sleep
Lunch is a buffet on Catherine and Grand Pioneers, and dinner is served on board. On Ambassador, dinner is set on the open deck when the weather allows. Drinks are not included on any of the five ships. If your child is a fussy eater, tell us when you book and we will ask the ship what the kitchen can do. That is a fairer question to them than a guess from us.
Evenings differ by ship. Catherine, Grand Pioneers, Celina and Tulip run a cooking class or a sunset on deck, and Ambassador offers the Piano Lounge or the sundeck with a happy hour. Karaoke costs extra on Catherine, and Ambassador's band rests on Mondays.
Wi-Fi differs by ship too. Celina's company says signal, TV and Wi-Fi can drop between the high cliffs. Ambassador lists Wi-Fi in the restaurant and lounge, often patchy among the islands. Download the films before you board and let the cliffs do the entertaining. Celina's company also says engine and generator noise can be heard at times, so tell us if you have a light sleeper.
Weather and the practical bits with children
Our notes for four of the five ships warn that storms, mostly between July and September, can close the bay or cancel sailings. The captain decides whether a boat sails, and the harbour authority can close the bay. Keep a spare day in your plan if you travel in those months; our guide to Lan Ha Bay weather month by month shows what each season does.
Two blogs report summer as the hottest season, with 30 to 35C in July and August, and say winter can be surprisingly cool overnight. For our trips, October to April is quoted for clear air and May to September for warm water. For a day boat, bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, a hat and a light rain layer.
Starting from Cat Ba with children
Both our day boats start from Cat Ba, at $45 per person for the Ha Long day cruise and $55 for the Lan Ha active day. If the day-versus-night question is still open, our guide to Ha Long Bay in a day or overnight sets out the trade.
Message us on WhatsApp at +84 961 737 103 with your children's ages and your dates. We will check the child rates and the connecting cabins in writing, and say honestly if a day boat fits your crew better than a cabin. The deposit is 30%, and the terms are on our cancellation policy page.
