Sapa or Ha Giang to Cat Ba by Sleeper Bus
The long way to the coast, done properly. Sleeper bus from the mountains through Hanoi to Cat Ba, timed so you arrive rested and in daylight.
At a glance
Sapa and Ha Giang are the far end of northern Vietnam, and the road to Cat Ba is long: roughly nine to fourteen hours, and every route runs through Hanoi. Tickets sold as direct are really connections with a sleeper at one end and a bus and ferry at the other. That is fine, but the departure you book makes a real difference. We choose it for you, so the night bus works for you, not against you.
Highlights
- One booking from the mountains to Cat Ba, with a person at the Hanoi changeover
- Sleeper bus with a flat berth, curtain and air conditioning
- A departure chosen so you arrive in daylight, not at 03:30
- Honest times, including the long legs and the ferry
- A message from your host with the pickup point
The route

Why we chose this trip
We would not book you onto the 03:30 arrival, and we would not let you plan a Ha Giang finish and a morning ferry that cannot connect. We work back from where you need to be, choose the departure that gives you a sleep and a daylight arrival, and make the Hanoi changeover somebody else's problem. Otherwise you own the connection, and a late bus costs you a day.
The day, as it really runs
Sleeper from the mountains
You board a sleeper bus in Sapa or Ha Giang. Take shoes off at the door and keep your passport, phone and money on you, not in the hold.
The road to Hanoi
You sleep as the bus follows mountain roads, with a toilet stop every two to three hours at highway services.
Hanoi changeover
The Ha Giang night bus reaches Hanoi between 03:00 and 05:00, which lines up with the first Cat Ba departures. Someone meets you and puts you on the next bus.
Bus and ferry to the coast
About three to three and a half hours from Hanoi on the bus and ferry, with hotel drop-off in central Cat Ba Town.
Arrive on Cat Ba
You reach the island in time for a swim, having lost one night of sleep instead of one day of holiday.
The exact departures depend on the direction and the season, and we confirm them in writing. Going the other way, Cat Ba to Sapa, we suggest the 06:00 or 09:00 to arrive in daylight.

Is this day right for you?
The honest version.
A good fit if
- You are finishing the mountains, or the Ha Giang Loop, and heading for the coast.
- You want one booking and someone waiting at the Hanoi changeover, instead of managing it yourself.
- You are happy sleeping on a bus and want to arrive with the day still ahead of you.
Tell us early if
- You are on a tight schedule. This is the longest common transfer in the north, nine to fourteen hours with a changeover in Hanoi, and it is not a quick way to travel.
- You are planning to take the 15:30 or 16:00 departure from Cat Ba to Sapa. They arrive at about 03:30, on a cold street, and no hotel will let you into a room.
- You get carsick easily. Sleeper buses take mountain corners, so book a lower berth and tell us before you go.
