Hanoi to Cat Ba, Door to Door
From your Hanoi hotel to your door in Cat Ba Town. We pick the departure and the crossing that fit your day, and tell you honestly how long it takes.
At a glance
Cat Ba is an island, so every route ends with water: a ferry, a hydrofoil or a cable car. The trip is about 160 to 170 km. It takes 3 to 3.5 hours on the move and 4 to 5 hours door to door with pickups, and the choices that matter are the departure time and the crossing. We book the seat or the car, check the timing against your plans, and message you the day before with pickup details.
Highlights
- Hotel pickup in the Hanoi Old Quarter, and drop-off on Cat Ba
- Two ways to go: shared bus and ferry, or a private car
- A departure chosen around your day, not the operator's
- Honest times, including the ferry queue in summer
- A message from your host the day before with pickup details
The route

Why we chose this trip
We live on the island and book these runs every week, so we know which departure suits which day. We tell you which crossing we would choose, why a 14:00 bus costs you an afternoon on Cat Ba, and when a night in Hanoi is the better plan. Then we send a message the day before with a name, a time and a number a human answers.
The day, as it really runs
Pickup in Hanoi
Most shared buses collect from hotels inside the Old Quarter. Outside that zone you may be asked to walk to a meeting point, so tell us where you are staying.
The expressway
About two hours on the Hanoi to Hai Phong expressway, with one comfort stop. A private car can stop for coffee or photos if you ask.
Change at the pier
At the coast you move from the road vehicle to a boat or cable car. Keep your ticket, because it covers both legs.
The crossing
The Dong Bai to Cai Vieng ferry takes about 30 minutes, a hydrofoil about 20, and the cable car about 9 over open sea.
The island road
A 30 to 40 minute road across Cat Ba from Cai Vieng to Cat Ba Town, dropping at hotels along the harbour front.
Arrive
At your hotel in central Cat Ba Town with the afternoon still yours, in time for the beach or an early boat booking.
Times are typical, not a promise. The road part is predictable and the ferry queue is not: in July and August it can add up to an hour. We confirm the departure with you in writing.

Is this day right for you?
The honest version.
A good fit if
- You want one booking from your Hanoi hotel to your hotel on Cat Ba, with no separate tickets to juggle.
- You are landing at Noi Bai or leaving Hanoi early and want a departure that suits you.
- You are a family or group and want the option of a private car instead of a shared seat.
Tell us early if
- You are arriving late. There is generally no ferry after about 6pm, so an evening arrival in Hanoi usually means one night in Hanoi or Hai Phong first.
- You are hoping to leave after 15:00. The last cable car is at 15:45, and a late bus puts you on the island in the dark with no time for the beach.
- You are travelling in July or August. Ferries and queues are busier, so book two or three days ahead.
