Deep Water Soloing in Lan Ha Bay

Deep water soloing is climbing without ropes over deep water: climb a sea cliff from the boat, then jump in. Half a day, warm months, all levels.

Adventure Half day Max 8 guests Small group Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay

At a glance

Deep water soloing, DWS for short, is climbing with no rope over deep water: if you fall, you fall into the sea. The walls rise straight out of Lan Ha, reachable only by boat, with more than 30 routes from easy slabs low over the water to hard lines at 7c+. You climb in climbing shoes, chalk on your hands, life jacket on the boat. When you come off the wall, and everyone comes off eventually, the water catches you.

Why we chose this trip

This is the most playful thing we sell. There is no rope to learn, no belay course, no gym etiquette: the boat drops you at a wall, you climb, you splash, you go again. The guide is a climber who picks walls with deep, clear water below and moves the session with the tide. You need to be comfortable in the sea, that is the one real requirement, and shoes and chalk are already on the boat.

The day, as it really runs

Start

Pickup and the pier

Hotel pickup in Cat Ba Town and a short transfer to the pier, shoes and chalk already on the boat.

Start

Out to the walls

Cruise out to a sea-cliff wall with deep, clear water below, chosen for the day's tide.

Start

First moves

A briefing, then your first climbs low over the water, close enough to the surface to be fun.

Middle

Climb and jump

The main session: climb at your level, jump or fall in, swim back to the boat and go again.

Middle

Paddle and float

A kayak or swim break between sets, in a quiet cove the road cannot reach.

End

Home

Cruise back through the islands and drop-off at your hotel.

Deep water soloing depends on the tide. The guide chooses walls with deep, clear water below and moves the session to keep it safe.

Is this day right for you?

The honest version.

A good fit if

  • You can swim and you like water deep enough to jump into.
  • You want to try climbing where the rope is the sea itself.
  • You are an experienced climber after the bay's harder lines, up to 7c+.

Tell us early if

  • You are not comfortable in deep water. Every route ends with a jump or a fall into the sea, so this is the wrong trip.
  • You are visiting between November and April. The water is warmest from May to October, so ask us first.
  • The tide rules the day. Some walls hold shallow reef at low water, so the guide picks where and when you climb.
The tide decides
Deep water soloing is tide dependent. Some walls have shallow reef below at low tide, so the guide chooses walls with deep water under them and moves the session through the day to keep every landing safe.
Comfortable in the water
Being comfortable in the water is the one requirement we insist on, because every route ends with a jump or a fall into the sea. Life jackets are provided, and nobody has to climb high to have a good time.
Season and weather
Warm water months are best, May to October. Weather calls belong to the captain, and if the sea is not right we will offer you another date rather than a bad session.

Questions guests ask

What is deep water soloing?
Climbing without a rope over deep water. You climb a sea cliff straight from the boat, and when you fall or jump, the sea is what catches you. It is the most fun version of climbing we know.
Do I need climbing experience?
No. There are easy walls low over the water for first-timers, and harder lines for experienced climbers. More than 30 routes means the guide can find something for everyone on the boat.
Do I need to swim well?
You should be comfortable in the water, as each attempt ends with a jump or a fall into the sea. Life jackets are provided, and the guide stays close in the boat.
Is it dangerous?
There are no ropes, but you climb over deep water with a guide and life jackets, on walls the guide has chosen for a safe landing. Falling in is the normal ending of every route, not an accident.
When is deep water soloing possible?
It depends on the tide and the season. Warm months with the right tide are best, May to October. Message us with your dates and we will check whether the water and the tide are on your side.
