Hospital Cave & Cannon Fort Half Day
A slower look at Cat Ba's wartime past: a hospital carved into a mountain, then the fort viewpoint at sunset, with a local host to explain both.
At a glance
Cat Ba is known for its water, but the land has a history too. In the early 1960s a three level hospital was built inside a mountain here so it could keep working during the bombing. Its concrete rooms are still standing. This half day pairs that cave with the old cannon fort, the best viewpoint on the island. You go with a host who can explain what you are looking at, because the signs on site have very little English.
Highlights
- Walk through the three level hospital built inside a mountain in the 1960s
- Stand in the rooms as they were left, with a host explaining them
- Cannon Fort, the best viewpoint on the island, timed for the evening light
- A slow afternoon with a break at the Cat Co beaches
- Small group, with a local host
The route

Why we chose this trip
We do not run this as a bus stop with a microphone. A host from the island walks you through the cave, explains what the rooms were for, and lets you have some silence in them. Then we time the fort for about 45 minutes before sunset, when the light is best and the crowds have thinned. If you would rather spend the afternoon on the water, we will say so before you book.
The day, as it really runs
Pickup in town
We collect you at your hotel in Cat Ba Town and head out towards the national park boundary.
Hospital Cave
About 30 minutes from town, a three level hospital carved into the mountain between 1963 and 1965. Allow 30 to 45 minutes inside.
Cat Co beaches
A pause at the coves over the headland, where you can swim, sit or simply cool off before the fort.
Up to Cannon Fort
A short ride up a steep road to the fort, arriving about 45 minutes before sunset to get the best light.
The view
Stay for the light over the harbour and the islands. This is the viewpoint most people say they wish they had come to earlier.
Back to town
Return to Cat Ba Town and your hotel, in good time for dinner.
We work backwards from sunset, so the pickup time changes through the year. We confirm it with you the day before. The order of the stops can change with the weather.

Is this day right for you?
The honest version.
A good fit if
- You are curious about the war years and want to understand this island beyond the beaches.
- You like a quiet afternoon with a few good stops rather than a long day on the road.
- You want to finish at a viewpoint over the harbour and the islands as the light goes.
Tell us early if
- You want a big attraction. Hospital Cave is a modest site, with bare concrete rooms and dim lighting, and a visit takes 30 to 45 minutes. It is worth it for the history, not for spectacle.
- You cannot manage steps. Both sites involve climbing, and the road up to Cannon Fort is steep.
- You are counting on a fixed schedule. The fort visit is timed to sunset, so the start time moves with the season.
- Tell us your dates first. We confirm this one day by day.
