Cat Ba by Motorbike with a Local Host
Half a day on the quiet roads of Cat Ba behind a local rider, with stops for views, a beach and coffee. No map, no worries.
At a glance
Cat Ba is best seen on a road, but it is not the easiest island to ride alone: the roads narrow, buffalo share them, and the licence rules are not what most visitors expect. This half day solves that. Your host rides ahead and picks the roads, the stops and the pace. You ride pillion with a local rider, or follow on your own bike if you hold a valid licence. Either way, you keep your eyes on the view.
Highlights
- A local host rides ahead and chooses the roads and the pace
- Ride pillion, or follow on your own bike if you hold a valid licence
- Scenic coast and hill roads, with stops for views and photos
- A break at the Cat Co beaches
- Private, up to 4 guests
The route

Why we chose this trip
Renting a bike is easy on Cat Ba. Renting one wisely is harder, because of the licence rules, the insurance and the roads toward the park. We take care of that side. You get a helmet that fits, a rider who knows where the gravel is, and stops chosen with you, not just the ones every rental leaflet lists. Then your host asks how it went, instead of asking for a review.
The day, as it really runs
Pickup and helmets
We meet you in Cat Ba Town, fit your helmet and go through the plan and the hand signals before we set off.
The coast road
Out of town along the coast, with the bay opening between the limestone hills and plenty of places to stop and photograph.
A viewpoint stop
A pause at a viewpoint above the karsts, with time for photos and a drink before the road climbs.
Cat Co beaches
Stop at the coves over the headland to swim or sit, and have a simple lunch before the ride back.
Cannon Fort road
If you want it, a short steep ride up to Cannon Fort, the best viewpoint on the island, at your own pace.
Back to town
Return to Cat Ba Town and your hotel, with the afternoon still yours.
We agree the route with you before we set off and change it as we go. Tell us if you would prefer the coast, the hills or the beaches. The weather and the road conditions decide the rest.

Is this day right for you?
The honest version.
A good fit if
- You want to see more of the island than a boat day allows, without renting a bike blind.
- You would rather sit behind a local rider who knows the road than follow a map.
- You like stopping when you see something: a viewpoint, a beach, a stall, a corner of coast.
Tell us early if
- You want to ride yourself but do not hold a valid Vietnamese licence or an international permit that covers motorbikes. Tell us early, because we will not put you on a bike without one.
- You are nervous on two wheels. Riding pillion is safe with an experienced rider, but tell us and we go gently.
- It rains heavily. Wet roads and loose gravel are a poor mix, and we move you to another day.
- Tell us your dates first. We confirm this one day by day.
