Market & Home Cooking Morning
Walk to the market with a host, then cook a Vietnamese home lunch and eat it at our table. A slow morning that ends with a full plate.
At a glance
In a Vietnamese home, feeding a visitor is the first thing you do. This morning is our version of that, with you in the kitchen. You walk into town with a host to see what is fresh, carry it back to Rustic House, and cook a home style lunch together. Then you sit down and eat it. It is not a class with a certificate. It is a morning at a family table, with the food you helped make in front of you.
Highlights
- Walk into Cat Ba Town with a host to choose what is fresh
- Cook a Vietnamese home lunch together at Rustic House
- Sit down and eat what you made, at a shared table
- Learn the dishes and the words behind them, including cơm nhà, the home cooked rice meal
- Small group, up to six guests
The route

Why we chose this trip
This is the closest thing we sell to simply having you at our house. There is no script and no audience, only the market, the kitchen and the table. We cook what is good that day, we explain the dishes as we go, and the meal ends when you are full, not when a timer says so. If you would rather just eat, we will happily point you to where locals do.
The day, as it really runs
Tea at the house
Arrive at Rustic House, 70 Tung Dinh, for tea and a short chat about what you like to eat and what you do not.
Into town
Walk into Cat Ba Town with your host to see what is on offer, choose ingredients and talk through the dishes.
Back to the kitchen
Return to the house and start cooking together. Your host shows the steps, and you chop, stir and taste.
Lunch at the table
Sit down together and eat the meal you made, served the way it would be at home, with rice at the centre.
Slow finish
Tea, questions and suggestions for the rest of your stay, then you are free for a beach or a rest.
The menu depends on what is fresh, on your tastes and on any allergies. We agree the plan with you the day before, and we change it if the market surprises us.

Is this day right for you?
The honest version.
A good fit if
- You like to understand a place through its food, and prefer hands on to watching.
- You want an easy, sociable morning that does not need a boat or a long walk.
- You are travelling as a couple, a family or a small group of friends and enjoy eating together.
Tell us early if
- You have allergies or a strict diet. Tell us when you book, and we plan the menu around you rather than adjusting on the morning.
- You expect a formal cooking school. This is a home kitchen and a shared meal, and it is relaxed and unhurried.
- You are counting on a fixed date. We are still setting this morning up, and the number of mornings we can run is small.
- Tell us your dates first. We confirm this one day by day.
